After almost a month without playing live baseball, Penn Club Baseball was back at it this weekend versus conference rival Hofstra. With Hofstra ranked #2 in the NCBA DII poll, we knew it would be a tough slate of games. In a rain-shortened series, PCB was able to split the series 1-1 and hand Hofstra their first lost. Here’s how things went down:
Thanks to a late start from campus and terrible directions, we rolled up to Hofstra’s field on Saturday 30 minutes before game time. After a quick warmup and fungo round, Patrick “@PMillaDaThrilla” Miller stepped into the batter’s box and Game 1 began. After a slow offensive start, PCB finally got things going in the 4th inning. Behind 1-0, we put up 2 runs thanks to a sac fly from Cherney and RBI groundout by Matthew “Okie” Powery. Even though Grant “Greg Jennings” Saunders kept dealing, Hofstra took a 3-2 lead by a sequence of bunts. PCB’s offense couldn’t help Grant out, and we ended up dropping Game One 4-2. Despite the L, PCB knew Hofstra’s #2 ranking was just a number.
Instead of bananas and protein bars for lunch, PCB opted for pizza provided by James “Big Stick” Emerick’s generous family.
The pizza definitely fueled the team, as we scored 4 runs in the top of the 1st off the bats of Grant, Cherney, and Okie. Hofstra countered by putting 4 runs of their own on the board in the bottom half of the 1st. Despite this blow, PCB battled back, stringing walks and hits together to score 5 runs in the 2nd inning. Frosh rightfielder Joe “All State” Strege hit a big double, showing us he wasn’t just all talk. After the 1st innings hiccup, Big Stick settled down on the mound and retired Hofstra 1-2-3 in the 2nd. PCB’s hitters cooled down a bit the rest of the game, only adding one run over the next 5 innings. However, Emerick didn’t need any more insurance runs. Heading into the bottom of the 7th, we had a 10-6 lead, but Hofstra had their 2-3-4 hitters leading off. Lefty decided to make it interesting by loading the bases with two outs. As Luke paced in the dugout and Hall sat stoically, Emerick delivered a 2-2 fastball to their 7 hitter. He lifted a fly ball, which Miller easily caught to end the game. 10-6 PCB, loss #1 for Hofstra.
