Conference Series vs. Rowan – Recap

This weekend, PCB had a conference series against Rowan. Hoping to sweep for the second series in a row, we came away with one win and one loss to put ourselves in decent shape for the remainder of the season.

We were supposed to have a night game on Friday to start the series, but the game got called Friday afternoon as rain struck the Philadelphia area.  The doubleheader on Saturday was held at Odorisio Park in Wayne, PA. Game 1 was a pitcher’s duel between our staff ace, Doc, and Rowan’s pitcher. Doc shut down the opposition, allowing only 2 runs in a complete game, 7-inning effort. However, our lively bats from last weekend disappeared as we hit pop up after pop up to Rowan’s fielders. In a close contest, we dropped the first game 2-1.

Game 2 was a similarly low-scoring affair. Both teams’ offenses went down relatively quietly through the first two innings. After Rowan put up 2 runs in the top of the 3rd, PCB, fueled by some aggressively smart baserunning by Co-President Matt Gus, retaliated with 3 of our own. Rowan got another in the 5th before Marshall Harden relieved Andrew Becker on the mound. Nursing a sore arm, Harden threw 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball to keep PCB in the extra-inning game. In the bottom of the 9th, PCB found itself with 2 men on. Rowan issued an intentional walk to get to Sam Rogers (clearly they don’t read our website). With the bases juiced and the game on the line, Rogers hit a hard ground ball to the second baseman. The throw home to the plate was not in time, and PCB walked off with a 4-3 victory. Next week we play Temple at Meiklejohn Stadium, Penn’s varsity field. We hope to get a good crowd out, as we only get that field once a year. Thanks to all the parents for the support and food.
