PCB: Fall 2012
–On Saturday, October 27th, 2012, Penn Club Baseball began its road to DII Regionals with a tripleheader against conference newcomers Rowan University. In our first baseball games of the entire Fall, PCB swept the tripleheader and now sit atop our conference with a 3-0 record. Here’s how it all went down on this very successful day of baseball:
Game 1
For the first time in PCB history, our lineup of 16 guys showed up to the field Saturday morning with more than an hour to spare before the first pitch. This newfound time to warm up time allowed us to sufficiently prepare for the 21 innings of baseball ahead of us. In Game 1, PCB turned to last season’s lefty ace James “Big Stick” Emerick. In addition to Emerick, our first lineup of the fall included an even mix of returning players and newcomers. In top-half of the 1st inning, Big Stick looked shaky but pitched out of a jam. Down 1-0, Bobby “Flex” Alexander and newcomer Ben “Old Man” Chambers put the ball in play and eventually scored to give us a 2-1 lead. For the rest of the game, Emerick settled down and collected 7 K’s. Offensively, the key for PCB was just making contact and forcing Rowan’s defense to make plays. Some costly errors by Rowan’s D led to some big runs for us in the 3rd and 6th innings. With solid performances by Emerick, Bobby, and Chambers, PCB took Game 1 by a score of 8-5.
Game 2
In true Penn Club Baseball tradition, Emerick’s dad brought us pizza between games––which served as our good luck charm throughout last season. After crushing these magical slices of pizza, it was time to play another 7 innings. For Game 2, several PCB freshmen made their debuts and senior pitcher Eric “Oat Boy” Windsor took the mound. After finally facing live pitching in Game 1, PCB offense warmed up and scored 6 runs in the first three innings of Game 2. Rookie shortstop Masaru “The Tsunami” Nogami served as a catalyst in the leadoff spot by getting on base and also driving in runs. Senior centerfield Stephen Chernekoff continued his usual offensive success by getting on base every at-bat. As the offense provided runs, Windsor remained in control throughout the game; he left in the 5th inning with only on earned run. Cherney collected a nervous two-inning save, and PCB won Game 2, 7-4.
Game 3
Always the toughest game to play, Game 3 was more of a grinder than the previous contests. Co-President Luke “Coot” Poethig called on freshman starter Doug Meyers to close out the tripleheader sweep for us. Standing tall at 6’3, but weighing like 120 lbs, Meyers is deservingly called “Slim Jim”. Using his lankyness to his advantage, Meyers threw some nasty breaking pitches that made some Rowan hitters look foolish. Showing signs of exhaustion, our offense cooled down a bit and struggled in the first two innings. However, a breakout 2-out rally in 3rd inning, featuring a double from Emerick and 2 RBI single from freshmen first basemen Matt “Wolfdog” Wolfen, gave us a 4-2 lead. Things got tense in the 6th inning when Rowan fought back and only trailed us by one run. However, clutch doubles by Rawlin “Chico” Rosario and Old Man Chambers quickly calmed our nerves. “Slim Jim” finished his complete game with two dirty K’s in the 7th and picked up his first win as a member of Penn Club Baseball. Game 3: 7-4 PCB
–And with that, PCB sweeps our Fall tripleheader for the second consecutive year and will head into the Spring with an undefeated record. Big thanks go to the families (Fink, Emerick, and Chambers), alumni (P. Mill), a PennRec staff (Nick) who came to support us. Also, we’re grateful to the Academy of New Church for allowing us to use their field once again.
Now for the Highlights and Lowlights:
–Luke’s failed search for second base
–Bobby vs. Rowan’s pitcher, first basemen, and entire bench
–Wolfen’s photography skills
–The random dog running onto the field and trying to injure Meyers’ pitching hand
–Miller’s backpack of Stones
–Rogers’ almost-Golden Sombrero
–Team’s general lack of speed
–Cherney’s alarm clock
–Racking up the bill at Cavs
